The new project is named "AltairPC" and is probably my most challanging work as of today. What is the AltairPC? It is a PC case but much more. Take a look at the early prototype pic here. It is early in the prototype stage and a lot of metal fabricating for the front panel needs to be finished but here is a little more about the project:

 

 

 

 

 

AltairPC features:

Standard ATX form factor for your Pentium 4 system
Desktop style case with hidden CD/DVD and floppy access
Color style to look like Altair 8800
Tripple case fans for smooth cooling without a lot of noise

Front Panel features:

Emulates front panel of Altair 8800 with 256bytes of RAM
Has several demo modes to display light patterns or play games
ISP programming adapter so that you can program AVR with your own program
USB connector with virtual serial port driver to be controlled by emulation software
RESET actual reset switch for system
ON/OFF actual on/off switch for system
Extra I/O pins to program your own input/output control with the AVR uP.

There is a USB connection to connect to the PC that gives control of the panel to emulators. Right now the USB interface is finished but no emulator has been modified to work with the front panel. I'll probably need help with the programming end of the emulator if somebody wants to help out. If there is enough interest in this project I will go into production before summer. I'll update the website with more pictures and more information as it is available.

News

4-22-2006 I've spent the last few days of spare time working on the Altair. Right now I'm working on code for demo modes. There is the potential to make 256 demo modes or mini games that will play on the panel. I won't be able to write enough demo or games to use up all possible demo modes but it is nice to have that option. I'm waiting on the prototype aluminum front panel frame to arrive from the machine shop. This is the major holdup in the AltairPC project because I've never had to have custom metal parts made before. I'm sure adjustments will also have to be made before any production runs can be made. I also want to take some video of the AltairPC so you can get a better grasp of just how cool it looks.

3-20-2006 I am in the process of getting the AltairPC web page together with the replica. Obviously, their is a lot of material to add to the site and I will be updating as more information is ready to announce.
