Re: Faceplate for sale?

This is an old thread, but I'd be in for either a decal or a whole new plate. That might motivate me to get the blue paint out.

BTW, Vince, I just used my old video of the Altair over on Hackaday, so don't be surprised to get a lot of visitors today ;)

Re: Just Purchased an Altair 8800micro :)

Welcome Walter. I had to check to make sure I didn't write that note! I built an 1802 back in the day (lost it in hurricane Katrina). Since I lost it, I got the ELF2K (in fact, I wrote the serial loader for it for Linux that you see floating around). I also have the 8800 (in fact, Vince was kind eno...

Re: An Interesting Poll

Mostly I play Star Trek or use WordStar ;-) I currently have it hooked via serial port to a window on my big Linux box. The truth is I don't use it as much as I think I will, but I do love having it there on the desk. I keep thinking I will write a BDOS for something like APE but have not gotten to ...

Re: Unpack a DSK file in windows

I read all posts to this forum and enjoy what I can glean from the comments. Unfortunately for me I'm can't write code and don't understand many of the technical (software) stuff. I visit every so often and watch for firmware updates and hardware add-ons. ;) These are fun little machines aren't they?

Re: Unpack a DSK file in windows

My GP3EZ software started life as a Windows C# app and I ported it for Mono. Most of the work was either GUI size adjustments or things like enumerating the serial port. Another item on my list -- you know I like talking to the box over the serial port (and I did the Altair-RFP project) but I am thi...

Re: Unpack a DSK file in windows

Sounds good Garry -- I've had good luck running C# CLR stuff on Linux using Mono so if you want some testing on that let me know. I have the other direction done sort of, but not sure what to do with the boot address on track 0 (the two bytes after the 80). On an example DSK most, but not all, secto...

Re: Unpack a DSK file in windows

Garry, this post inspired me to write a converter to go from DSK to CPM format so you can read using cpmtools. See https://github.com/wd5gnr/diskcvt I'll try to update it soon so it could go back the other way but out of time for now. If anyone uses this, let me know it is working for you as it is &...

Re: cassette interface

I did mine with this: http://www.awce.com/rs1.htm You can connect to the headers or the "USB" port on the RAM/DSK board. I didn't install the DE9 and wired to a panel mounted DE9 (hard to cut it out nicely but I did ok). You could also use a TTL to USB connector if you wanted USB but that'...

Another Altair Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPSuKLY ... e=youtu.be

Last time I showed Star Trek on a period terminal. I'm on the Altair's VGA this time, but I'm running CP/M.

Pulling out SIMH Disks

There are lots of disks in SIMH format and I wanted to get some of them into plain files so I could TREAD them onto a disk for the Altair. For example: http:// schorn.ch/altair.html Or: http://classiccmp.org/cpmarchives/cpm/mirrors/www.schorn.ch/cpm/intro.php Here's what has worked for me under Linu...

Re: firmware version V52 now available

Rats. I get 88-DCDD not found. I bet my board is too old. I wonder if i can reflash the Atmel part on the DSK board or if it is something bigger? I see the source, but it looks like you have to pull the CPU to flash it directly (which I can do, of course). Or is there a magic terminal command for th...

Re: firmware version V52 now available

Hi Garry. Yeah, I've been on hiatus but I'm back ;-) Looks like you've kept busy. I never did get CP/M booted, but that's my goal this time around. I have an early disk board so I don't know if it is actually up to the task or not, but we'll see. Leave it to me to find an undocumented command ;-) Ed...

Re: firmware version V52 now available

Hmm downgrading to 5.1 made it worse. There must be something I've forgotten about pacing the output from the terminal. I'll go look at the manual.... Odd... my memory is bad... it is just Control+F1. So holding the Alt key down did something "bad". I will try again with 5.2. Bad to get ol...

Re: firmware version V52 now available

I know I'm late to the game, but I just upgraded to 5.2. Seemed to work ok, but.... I load 8K Basic. Seems to be fine. Then I load any of the example BAS programs using Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or whatever). It seems to work, but the programs won't run. A little exam shows that it is dropping some character fro...

Plus if you want instructions:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uDI ... edit?hl=en

I just wrote this up quick, so I may (or may not) edit it, but it will at least give you a how to.

Have fun,

Al W.
