Re: USB keyboards

Vince, why don't you design a proper kit for that? I'll buy at least three, I promise! :) I tried (briefly) eBay, but searching for "ps2 keyboard", it shows hundreds of USB keyboards with the ps2 adapter. Anyway I'm coming to the US for Christmas, I will look into some garage sales or some...

USB keyboards

Hi all, I have a problem with finding a suitable keyboard to use with my Altair Micro. Apparently ps/2 keyboards are impossible to find here. I found a really nice USB keyboard, very very small, which would make a great rig with the Altair and my 5" mini LCD TV. But trying to plug it in through...

Re: anyone here who can help out with European supliers?

This post reminds me of something I wanted to ask a while ago but then forgot. In my Altair, the temporary switches (examine/examine next, deposit/deposit next, step) are not very good. They tend to get stuck quite easily in the "up" position, and sometimes also get stuck in the neutral po...

Regulator runs cool now!

I've always had problems with the regulator's temperature, it would get very hot very soon. The power supply I was using was rated 8V, but was putting out about 8.5, so that's a lot of power being converted to heat. The only other power supply I could use was a 6V, but the voltage was too low for th...

Re: Front panel operation

I tried the Auto step mode, and I can confirm your observations - A15 lights but dimmer. But the Auto-step is much much faster than I thought!! I thought (and hoped) it would be a very slow mode, useful to see the "blinkenlights" - at say 5 steps per second or so... as it is now, it's not ...

Re: Front panel operation

Hi Billy, I seem to remember that to try the step mode, I just ran the program with the sweep at the lowest speed, then when A15 was lit I stopped it and started stepping from there! But I might be remembering wrong. I'll try Autostep tonight when I get back home and post the results. Thanks for now...

Re: Front panel operation

Hi Billy, Of course you're right! It's a typo. I didn't catch it because when I checked it, I used the binary column, thinking that typos would be more likely to happen there... By the way, try running it step-by-step if you can, and check if the A15 led works in step mode? For me it doesn't, it jus...

Re: Front panel operation

In case anyone's interested, I modified a program that I found on the net, written by Lawrence Woodman for the IMSAI using its "output LEDs" feature. It's just a program that sweeps a LED light, with a speed that varies depending on the position of the sense switches. Here's the listing: L...

Re: Front panel operation

OK, I'll answer my own question here. There is a way to light up the LEDs after all, as I suppose you all know! :) I only found out about the 032 instruction right now, after finding the "Kill the bit" game listing. My bad. So now the Cylon eyes program is here, and I'm off to more program...

Front panel operation

Now that I know my Altair is behaving sort of as intended, I've been trying to program it. I wanted to mostly use it in "stand-alone" front-panel-only mode, because I don't have the space to set it up with monitor and keyboard, and also because that's how the early users used it. But I fou...

Re: A new Altair! A little temperamental.

Thank you for your reply. I seem to remember that I had 40-pin hard disk cables somewhere, and some were very short, I could try replacing them. So you're saying that your Altair too lights the W0 led instead of INT when switched on, before being ready? I also noticed something weird when accessing ...

A new Altair! A little temperamental.

Hello, A few days ago I received my long-awaited kits, and yesterday I assembled the Altair. I have to say that the quality of the kits is great. Just holding the bare boards is a pleasure, they're really professional and well done. Anyway, I assembled the boards in about 4 hours (overall they were ...

Re: What serial numbers have shipped?

Hi Vince,
I'll do that. I think it looks better especially when seen "sideways".
How do I post photos, do I upload them somewhere like Imageshack and post the link here?

By the way, Vince: I sent you a few emails, did you get them?

Re: What serial numbers have shipped?

I just built today the s/n 200! It took me between 4 and 5 hours. I think it has some minor issues though, I'll read the manual better and post about this later in a new thread. I didn't put the LEDs all the way out of the front panel, but I put them so that only the "dome" sticks out of t...
