Re: Burning the EEprom? Help...

Hi. Your 'Terminal' and 'CPU' display doesn't look right - it should show '5.x' for both, where 'x' is a small number - 0, 1 or 2. For example, mine says: ALTAIR 8800micro www.brielcomputers.com Terminal 5.2, CPU 5.2 VGA VT100 To update the firmware, set the following switches: Protect: Down AUX: Up...

Re: Serial interface usage

I am writing the documentation, which currently amounts to a very simple Google Docs document. It can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1c1TBfCwY4sS6dAQfkF-kgntKxOcZEtHUsKt6GNLX46o/edit?usp=sharing I will be adding photos, and there will probably be many corrections to be made. Comme...

Garryj wrote: Pin 12 of the Propeller chip on the main board is VDD and C11 is its decoupling cap. Garryj, thanks for that - got it. I'll leave this until tomorrow, because there isn't much light in here now - and I am getting tired. My soldering's bad enough when it's light, but when it's dark, it'...

Re: Serial interface usage

Hello garryj, chassum and others, From garryj: I'll be darned -- your serial I/O is working fine. I just dumped a listing from 4K and 8K BASIC and the high bit of keyword characters are set as you described -- 8K BASIC sets it on the first keyword character and 4K the last. I haven't ever combed an ...

Re: Serial interface usage

Hello Garry, Thanks for your reply. That is odd. Is this just with 4K BASIC, or do 8K and 16K BASIC do it also? I'd expect all versions to be sending 7-bit ASCII. Which terminal program are you using? Although it shouldn't be needed, most programs expose an option to force incoming data to 7 bits. V...

Re: Serial interface usage

My apologies for dithering with this one, as I have rather poor eyesight and have to rely on daylight to show me what I'm doing. In addition, I also required extra components and these took a few days to be delivered. List of excuses over.. I have connected a PCB header to CN3 on the RAM drive board...

Re: Serial interface usage

Vince, Galaga, thanks for your replies - I'll post another message when I've completed the mod. I'll use 3.3V and I'll add resistors too (thanks, Galaga).

Serial interface usage

Hi folks, I've got a Bluetooth serial adaptor (similar to this one: http://www.hobbytronics.co.uk/bluetooth-module ) that I'd like to install in my micro, for a bit of wireless remote operation. The adaptor emulates an RFCOMM channel on one side, and can use 3.3V or 5V signal levels. Referring to th...

Re: How to make the 8800 micro a bit heavier?

However it would be nice to make the micro somewhat heavier. Is there anyone out there who already has a simple solution to the problem? I am not thinking about putting a VGA monitor on top of the micro but to make the micro itself somewhat heavier. When faced with projects that just won't sit stil...

Re: What IO port is the built in terminal/serial port

I want to do a little dev work on a bootloader and need to know if the built in terminal and serial port are at IO ports 20/21 like a real MITS SIO2 port 0. Thanks, Corey The serial port is at 10/11h (i.e. 16/17 decimal) - 20/21 being octal. I wrote a program to test this. This was written in CP/M ...

Re: A new Altair! A little temperamental.

Hi, I've had a look at the power-on LED pattern of my unit - here's what I get: For these tests, the RUN/STOP switch is on 'STOP'. With AUX and PROT up, the right bank of LEDs (A8 to A0, D7 to D0) light for a second, and then these go out and the left bank (MEMR to INT, A15 to A9) light up. These go...

Re: VGA or composite. What do you guys use?

I mainly use the VGA output, because I don't have many composite video monitors. Also, I can read the VGA text better than I can with the composite output. That said, the composite output offers a lot of possibilities for games and graphics, due to the colour sequences. I couldn't find any documenta...

Re: Firmware Updates?

There haven't been any firmware updates for a while; I suggest you look on this forum, and they'll be announced (there doesn't seem to be a fixed page for updates).

I have firmware version 5.1, if that helps.

Re: A new Altair! A little temperamental.

I have exactly the same behaviour with my Altair 8800 Micro. When I first tested it, I thought it was broken: the lights were on all the time and when I waved my hand near the computer, the lights followed my hand! I had a look at the board and found that when the reset switch is up - as it was - th...
