The lines are from the expansion port as you say. The program is music box from the first book of KIM, with some line alterations, found in the book of KIM, to send output to the application port rather than the KIMs tape output.
The only circuit needing building is a resistor or two and a transistor.
Easy.
The wee circuit is used by various other music program's that can be found in Kim user notes.
It's also pretty similar to the burgler alarm in the manual and I made the wee piano doing pretty much the same thing.
