Status of Altair 8800 4th batch?

Postby tranter » Sep Fri 06, 2013 9:42 am

Hello Vince (and others):

How are pre-orders going for the next batch of 8800s? Do you have a timeframe in mind for when you could start production?

We could do a roll call of orders placed.

I'm in for one kit.

Vince said "Updates on the status of production will be sent on a regular basis to keep you updated.", so I expect he'll chime in on this eventually.

If there are two 'Squeaky Wheels' here so far then there may be another one or two preorders in at this point. (That's just minimalist wishful thinking on my part. Maybe we're up to nine already? Soon my precious!)

I am strongly considering it.

However, I won't be able to throw down any money until next week.

I need to send an update but I'm waiting to hear back from Protoplates. I'm doing some small changes on the rear panel and adding a DB9 cutout for external serial. I think we need 1-2 more and we are good to go on the numbers. One person is going to wait, but I'm sure we will get a couple more during the 4 weeks the panels are in production.

Vince,

Will you offer a "hardware patch" instruction to Altair 3rd batch and earlier owners?

Thanks!

Sorry for the delayed answer, but yes I will. The original design idea of the Altair was to incorporate the terminal onboard to make it an all in one package. Obviously I should have considered some would want to use other terminal devices. There will be a small add-on board available before too long that will give you a DB9 connection and with the newest 5.2 firmware you can change the baud rate to what you want!

I'm also looking into having extra rear panels made for those who may want to just get a new panel instead of cutting their own hole in it themselves. If I got the price correct it will be $20 for a panel. I'll get an update on that for anybody who is interested.

Vince,

Yes, I am very interested in this kind of hardware patch! Please add my name to the special rear panel order of yours.

Just so you know, I'm talking about 2 different things. An add on pcb that will give you a true serial port and the rear metal panel that has an extra cut out for DB9 interface.

I'm working out one more extra for the front panel. Many people wanted to add the brushed aluminum plate at the bottom with a logo. An easier solution would be to have the panel manufacturer mask off the bottom of the plate. This will give the brushed aluminum portion at the bottom that we can just add a decal logo to to give it the ALTAIR 8800 look. This will cost me a little but will enhance the look of the front panel. I'm going to get the details on this to Protoplates tomorrow.

I would very much like to see a brushed aluminum plate to dress up the front panel. Also, is there any chance of designing a tarbell-compatible cassette board for this machine?

Personally, I'm hoping to eventually see a Zaltair clone

How do you clone a fictitious machine?

Well, looks like we aren't getting the brushed aluminum unpainted section of the bottom. I needed .42" unpainted and they can only do .5" or .25" unpainted. I'm really upset that can't happen. Seemed like a great solution to getting the brushed aluminum bottom. I'm looking to see if they can make small .4" strips of brushed aluminum. Not sure if it is possible to machine that small of a piece or not.
