Activity L.e.d.s for disk A and disk B?

Postby waltermixxx » May Thu 14, 2015 10:10 pm

i was thinking of dead bugging a 74ls04 on top of the ram/88-dsk atmega8515 and grabbing the disk1 and disk2 lines at pin 14 and 16 buffer them and invert them then through a 220 ohm resisters to red (or green) l.e.d.s to ground. Thinking of building a little enclosure that looks like a small disk drive (3d print the front so it's releafed to look like a disk drive with the doors closed, and an activity led.)

Wonder what your thoughts are and if you see any downside to that method, keeping battery life in mind in case this idea messes with the battery backed up ram. Vcc from 74ls04 would be 5v. (Not from the battery.) so doubt it will but I am no engineer.

Might be handy for trouble shooting?

That sounds like a nice addition to the 8800 Micro and think it would look great on the desk. The only minor nit to pick would be "Why would the activity LED be on if the door were open?"

And my PERSONAL answer would probably be along the lines of "Because it looks somewhat cooler that way!"

Now if it were possible to move/extend the SD card slot to the external drive enclosure AND make the door into a functional SD card eject lever... (but I digress, and am getting a little too silly)

Here is my "Dual Disk Drive activity L.E.D.s" Autodesk 123D Design file.
all the parts are seperate, although presented as one piece, the parts can be exported as stl
and 3d printed... the wholes will fit 5mm l.e.d.s :)

hope you like. :)

here is the file. :)

it's 190mm wide so any 3d printer that can do 8" wide should be able to :)
My replicator 2 should be able to handle it. :)

ok last picture... :)

I promise :) I just need a small box to glue this to the front of, and a clever way (perhaps unused pins on the serial connector, for +5, Gnd, Disk1, and Disk 2 chip select pins.)
that may be the ticket :) to get the signals to the small perf board with the 74LS04 instead of dead bugging it...) :)

excuse the bad blue tape job, i just wanted to get a feel for it :)

it would look better. :)

(ok somewhat obsessed. :) )

Cheers. :)

i will post the result when done :)

That tape job actually looks pretty good!

For the floppy disks I would probably use something that resembles 5.25" or 8" drives instead of 3.5" drives though, for more authenticity...

it's 5 1/4" facade, and I will drill out the L.E.D. and insert a real one from behind. :)
