Altair 8800 Micro Project Status

Discuss the new Altair 8800 Micro

Ok, I got the rear panel prototypes in and I'm happy. I had to adjust a couple of the holes slightly, but overall I really am glad I decided to go with a prebuilt rear panel instead of making it myself. Since that was the final hardware piece I've openned up preorders. I've already sent out emails to those who wanted to be on the preorder list and many have preordered. The panel order is going in and it will take 4-6 weeks to arrive. When they come in, orders will start going out. Since there is a large number of orders to ship, it will take a little while but I should have them shipped within 2 weeks.

Vince, joining the conversation here late and you may have already covered this topic. How will firmware fixes/upgrades be handled? Can I assume there will be add-on devices, more memory, etc. planned? Well I guess I should ask is what future plans do you envision for the Micro88? Thanks, Chuck

I can post or email .bin files that you can load by setting the "sense switches" to 0x55, then powering up the Altair. This goes into a flash update mode and asks for the file name (from the SD card). More memory will be looked into, first I want to roll out that main CPU unit. This thing is like 5 years in the making. After roll out, I'll look into more memory and I/O, one step at a time.

Oh yes, I didn't want to push as do understand all the years and effort you put into the project. Just thought I'd see what is envisioned....

Just the ones on the website of the prototypes with the toggle switches. These are alum panels with decal overlays. The production version will be like the Altair 8800, where the panels are painted and silkscreened. I won't have pictures of those until they come in. They are due in 4-6 weeks. The rear panels I'll take a photo of these week and get it posted.

Hey Vince! I was just re-reading some of the thread and had a question.

When you say "Because of the added overhead of the rear panel, I will not be including an SD card" are you indicating that there will be no SD/interface or that you are simply not supplying a blank card to be used?

I was just doing some planning and wanted to clarify.

Thanks!

No, I was going to give a SD card but I'm not going to do that. The SD slot will be there!

Yup, big wait right now is on the front/rear panels. About 2 weeks on those, then I can start filling orders. I have about 10 of the 50 preorders remaining.

Great News! I'll be waitin'! Love the idea of sn#s and signature on first x number of units.

Very close! The panels are suppose to ship tomorrow after inspection. I will get them in about a week and can start the process of filling orders. For anybody still wanting to order one, there are about 3 left from this batch.

Do you know how long it will be between this release and the next one? It sounds like this release is almost sold out.
