Altair 8800micro in and assembled!

Postby Fox » Feb Mon 14, 2011 10:25 pm

Okay, my kit just arrived and I spent all day today putting it together...
But it seems that Vince still owes me 2 22pF caps and the 16MHz crystal :(
So I can't play with it yet.
Otherwise everything looks good to me, I looked everywhere to see if I had the parts, but no such luck. :\
Anyway, #105 is assembled and accounted for otherwise!

Okay, I managed to get my Altair fired up today...
It worked the first time I turned it on. :D
Everything works great, it looks great, and I'm incredibly pleased with this little machine.
Took me about 5 or 6 hours all in all to put together, the only break I took was between doing the main board and the front panel.
I accidentally ripped all the posts off the panel after I'd gotten everything soldered in, wasn't a big deal as I just lined it up and glued it back on.
I LOVE the front panel, seeing the lights blink as all the instructions and ram addresses is amazing to me.
It's a great kit, a bit pricey but well worth it if you ask me. :D
Can't wait to see about Vince's RAM drive board idea to get CP/M going on it...

I've got it set up and running with a battery pack of 9 volts so I can program with the switches on the go, I'll see about doing a serial mod so I can use it with my laptop too. In the mean time I've just been writing little programs for fun. currently I'm working on making a little program of loops that will give a nice light show for demo purposes. Still loving this little machine :D
