This is a block diagram of the replica 1. The idea behind the project was to keep the design down to a minimum of parts and yet still allow full compatibility with the Apple 1 computer.
The chart above shows the memory map of the replica 1. The zero page is identical to the Apple 1, and the main program RAM is increased from 4K to 32K. The area occupied with BASIC was previously RAM on the Apple 1 but now is EEPROM so BASIC is resident in ROM at all times. This makes for faster loading of programs. Krusader also is resident in ROM. These do not change the compatibility of the replica 1 with the apple 1 but adds important features to the system.

The replica 1 is a functional clone of the apple 1 computer created by Steve Wozniak in 1976. This was the computer that Steve Jobs and Woz used to start Apple Computers in 1976. The latest version of the replica 1 is labeled SE for Second Edition. The replica 1 functions exactly like the apple 1 with many of the same components like a 6502 CPU and 6821 PIA. It comes with 32K RAM and 8K EEPROM. Addtional features like a ps/2 port, serial, USB port, ATX and DC wall power supply connectors makes the replica 1 a fully functional computer system for todays collector or hobby builder. Available as a kit or assembled, the replica 1 is sure to give you hours of fun and excitement as you relive the glory days of computing. As a new feature, a full blown assembler called Krusader written by Ken Wessen was added to the EPROM space giving the user the ability to assembler 6502 programs right on the replica 1 without a PC. Write 6502 machine code programs using mnemonics instead of just programming hex code into the memory. This added programming tool makes the repica 1 not only a nostalgic computer but a great learning tool and introduction to microprocessors.

1-2-2007 Happy New Year! There are two new add-on boards under development for the replica 1. First is the long awaited Cassette Interface 1 board. It is nearly a look-a-like of the original except for using a single 28C64 EEPROM in place of the 2 128 byte PROM's. Prototype testing is underway and production run is expect to begin in January some time. The other board is a multifunction board. It gives true serial port, parallel port, EEPROM programmer, Mockingboard sound and optional SpeakJet voice chip all on a single board! Don't miss out helping decide the features to go onboard, check the forums for more information.

10-25-2006 The registration is nearly full for the replica 1 workshop November 5th at the Vintage Computer Festival. Don't miss out on this fun event. Along with the replica 1 on display will be the CFFA1 (Compact Flash for Apple 1). It is a disk storage device that uses compact flash cards like a hard drive. Read/write, delete, rename, format (non-prodos bootable) in prodos volumes that can be read/written with CiderPress software.
10-9-2006 The Vintage Computer Festival (VCF) is an annual event where vintage collectors from all over the world meet to discuss and show off their vintage computers. This year, Briel Computers will be holding a workshop where you can build a replica 1 in a classroom environment. The workshop will be held on Saturday November 4th at the VCF in Mountain View, CA. The workshop is limited to 10 people and will run about 2 hours. For only $149 you get the replica 1 SE kit that you build yourself in the workshop with the guidance of the replica 1 designer Vince Briel. That's a $10 savings from the regular price and the workshop is FREE! For those who have no soldering skills, a mostly assembled version is available upon request. Please visit the Vintage Computer Festival site for more information on the workshop here. Remember, the workshop is limited to 10 people, so don't miss out. Registration is on a first come first serve basis.
8-27-2006 There are just about 15 replica 1 SE boards left. Make sure you get one before they are gone. We are working on updating the downloads section to add more programs and add loading instructions when needed. There is also a prototype expansion board underway. It will work with both the apple 1 and the replica 1 to give 3 additional slots! This is going to be needed for the future hardware that is under development right now.
8-26-2006 The replica 1 SE manual has now been added to the download section.
7-27-2006 We are now taking orders for the replica 1 SE. Please see the ordering link above to order yours today. Orders will be on a first come first serve basis. 50 units are available then we will evaluate if more are going to be produced. For those who have been waiting, the wait is over!
6-26-2006 The production run of Replica 1 SE boards is underway. Soon you can preorder your replica 1 SE. Krusader assembler to be included with the replica 1 SE! Improvements to the SE over prior revision replica 1's are as follows: Built on serial interface. Built on power switch and LED light. ATX connector. DC power connector to power the replica from a 6V wall wart power supply. Optional USB interface for your PC or Mac with software drivers. Creates a virtual comm port on your PC or Mac. Now you can power the replica 1 right from the USB port without a wall wart power supply or ATX connector!
5-5-2006 The Replica 1 SE prototype board has arrived and I am busing testing things out. Click on the picture above for a full size view. The improvements are really nice and make the replica 1 a much more complete board. Improvements are seen here with things such as built in USB interface, new ATX power source or wall brick power source, On/Off switch and improved overall layout. Wider pads for the sockets makes soldering easier for beginners. After the replica 1 SE is fully tested, the first run of boards will begin. Stay tuned!
4-21-2006 Due to a large number of requests for replica 1's there has been an increased effort to finish the new version. It is close to a prototype and there should be news by middle of May. Right now I'm testing a different microcontroller for the keyboard. The old ATMEGA8515 was way too much controller for the job. The replacement is the ATMEGA8 which is smaller and fits better with the new board. Please check out the forum for more information on the progress of the Replica 1 SE.
3-26-2006 There are 2 new games for download. Deal or No Deal is a game I wrote based on the new TV game show starring Howie Mandell. It is a text version of the game so there are no girls :(. Let me know what you think. I also added reverse, an old classic game.
3-17-2006 I am in the process of uploading some new (old) games for the replica 1. One is Deal or No Deal based on the new game show starring Howie Mandel. The other is one of the classic games from Creative computing called "bowling". I'm also working on the new replica 1. Improvements are slight but significant. See the forums for details.
2-19-2006 Hunt the Wumpus game has been uploaded into the database. This is a classic game from the Creative Computing collection and fits perfect with the replica 1 and Apple 1 computers. Some code mods were required to get the program to work with BASIC. See the Downloads to get a copy. The downloads section is being revamped to show screen shots of some of the games.
2-18-2006 There have been a number of requests for replica 1's. If more requests come in, another run of boards will be made. There has been progress on new hardware development for the replica and another completely different project. Keep an eye on the forums for more information. Also, a new program for the replica 1 is being developed and should be finished by the end of the month.
1-30-2005: A lot of you have emailed and requested a replica 1. What has been decided is that if you are interested drop me an email here and I will add your name and email address to a list. If enough people are interested in a replica, another run of boards will be made. If you have been wanting a replica, don't wait, let me know. Briel Computers is not handling retail sales so another company will be handling sales but any warranty or other questions about the replica 1 should be asked here. More information on that to come later.
