workshop

NYC Resistor Hackspace

November 14, 2009

Description

In the 1970's and into the early 1980's building a computer or accessories from a kit was not only a good way to save money, it was a fun and great learning experience. Now you can relive those days with the Briel Computers series of workshops. With little or no extra fee than the price of the kit, you can enjoy all the fun of building your own kit in a classroom style setting. Don't miss out on a once in a lifetime experience. Build something today!

In this workshop participants will have their choice to build either the PockeTerm single-board terminal, replica 1 TE or Micro-KIM kits. The cost of the kits does not include the Resistor Club registration fee of $35. You must sign up with the resistor club to participate in the workshop.

This workshop will cover the complete assembly of this fun to build terminal. Some soldering experience is expected but the instructor can allow extra attention for participants with no soldering experience. This workshop is limited to ten participants, so personal assistance from the instructor will be available throughout the session.

More information on the PockeTerm can be found here: SOLD OUT

More information on the replica 1 TE can be found here: SOLD OUT

More information on the Micro-KIM can be found here: Micro-KIM

After the kits have been assembled there will be a short tutorial on programming the Parallax Propeller as used in both the replica 1 (for I/O) and the PockeTerm (main processor).

Instructor

This workshop will be conducted by Vince Briel, a computer engineer from Ohio and founder of Briel Computers. Vince is the designer of the replica 1, Micro-KIM and PockeTerm with over 20 years of hardware design experience. Vince manages large computer networks and spends most of his spare time designing new hardware projects.

Prerequisites and Tools

The completed workshop can be tested with a supplied monitor and keyboard for the replica 1 and PockeTerm as well as a power supply.

Participants with previous soldering experience will find this kit relatively simple to complete. For those with little or no soldering experience, Vince will help guide you through building your kit.

The entire workshop will run for approximately 2-3 hours depending on which kit you choose to build.
