Seeking logo artwork

Would someone please give me the artwork for the micro-altair faceplate logo? My local hackerspace has a laser cutter which can also be used to create blackened engravings.

Re: spring loaded reset toggle switch?

I received a new on-(on) switch from Jameco to replace the (on)-off-(on) RESET switch. Fiddling around with it some more, I think that the STEP switch should also be on-(on) because there's no connection on the other side of the throw.

Re: spring loaded reset toggle switch?

FYI, the part you want is actually 611-7108SYCQE . The other part is (on)-off-(on) whereas for the reset switch you want on-(on).

Re: Two serial ports?

Here's something using a 16550A UART: https://github.com/DavidGriffith/altairmicro-serial

I'm not at all sure it would work and would very much like comments and advice.

Vince? Are you still around?

Re: 8800 Micro Disk Controller

FWIW, if you want an inexpensive and decent EPROM burner that will work with Linux, check out the MiniPRO TL866xx on Ebay. GPLed software for controlling it can be found at https://github.com/vdudouyt/minipro. The two variants of the MiniPRO are exactly the same, just the firmware is different. That...

Re: Kit add-on ideas for the Altair 8800 Micro

I had a couple of ideas for add-ons that I think would be super neat for the Altair 8800 Micro platform: 1) Along the lines of the serial connector add-on, perhaps a PC speaker could be easy to adapt to the platform? My guess is that this would plug in to the expansion header, and would require a r...

Re: Two serial ports?

For your board, I'd eliminate the second expansion connector and instead use a long-tailed socket. It would make stacking up more boards easier. The usual footprint of a DE9 connector pigtail is a 2x5 header, not a 1x9. If the memory and ramdisk board is made mandatory, then the serial board could b...

Re: Two serial ports?

As I was doing the final assembly on my machine, I was tracing lines to rule out shorts. At that time I noticed that the traces for the serial port on the ramdisk board went directly to pins on the expansion connector. Then I looked at the schematic. That serial port is actually on the main board an...

Number 277 lives!

I received #277 as a kit two years ago and for assorted reasons didn't complete it until tonight. Now it's working, mostly.

Two serial ports?

Has anyone here successfully modified their machine to support two serial ports? I'd like to investigate making a tape interface. It seems that the original Altair tape interface was merely a serial board with a simple modem bolted to its back. The one serial port I have comes off the ramdisk board....

Re: Any active, related to vintage computing, IRC channels?

Try #classiccmp on irc.freenode.net. There's always something interesting going on there.

For future expansion cards

I would like to recommend that future expansion cards use long-tailed header sockets for their connectors. That way boards can be more easily stacked without having to worry about the position of the connector on the board below.

standoffs for mounting ramdisk board

My kit is missing the standoffs for mounting the ramdisk board atop the main board. Would someone with these standoffs please tell measure yours and tell me how tall they are?
