Status of Altair 8800 4th batch?

Hello Vince (and others):

How are pre-orders going for the next batch of 8800s? Do you have a timeframe in mind for when you could start production?

Re: The 1 wire solution to the Wall Wart ACI issue..

Let me see if I can summarize the status of issues we've seen with the ACI. Not all of these are confirmed as being real problems or solutions. The WozMon code in the Replica 1 EEPROM may not be compatible with the ACI firmware due to changes made by the Krusader assembler. There is a new firmware f...

Re: How many people have the "beta" cassette adapter working

I haven't made any further progress. I'd be interested in hearing the results of testing anyone else has done.

Re: How many people have the "beta" cassette adapter working

I'm not convinced it is the EPROM, at least in my case, although I'd be happy if that is it. I've verified that I can consistently read my EPROM (e.g. running a program that calculates the checksum) and get the correct data. I've also tried using an EEPROM and running the ACI firmware out of RAM. I ...

Re: ACI Kit Arrived

I don't know if this is related to any of the issues with the ACI but I thought I would mention it: I normally power my Replica 1 with a "wall wart" but I did some testing with an ATX power supply. I noticed that when using an ATX supply the -12V line was quite noisy. I added a 100uF capac...

Re: How many people have the "beta" cassette adapter working

Mine is basically not working - I get a very high error rate when reading. More details have been posted here on the forum. I have a Replica 1 Third Edition.

Re: ACI Kit Arrived

If you have a 27C64 EPROM then you would need an EPROM programmer to change it. I suggest checking with Vince and seeing if he thinks the EPROM is bad and if he can send you a replacement.

Re: ACI Kit Arrived

Check that it is reading the EEPROM correctly. If you dump it in the Woz Monitor the data should match this: C100.C1FF C100: A9 AA 20 EF FF A9 8D 20 C108: EF FF A0 FF C8 AD 11 D0 C110: 10 FB AD 10 D0 99 00 02 C118: 20 EF FF C9 9B F0 E1 C9 C120: 8D D0 E9 A2 FF A9 00 85 C128: 24 85 25 85 26 85 27 E8 C...

Re: ACI Kit Arrived

See if it is sending data out. Plug headphones into the TO TAPE jack. After typing C100R <Enter> try writing some data by typing 300.3FFF<Enter> You should hear 10 seconds of a solid header tone and then about 25 seconds of changing tone for the data. It should then go back to the Woz Monitor.

Re: ACI Kit Arrived

I haven't got it to work reliably yet. As well as a tape recorder I've used a computer and an MP3 player to record and play back the sound files and they look very clean (I have an oscilloscope) but I get many errors. It seems to start writing data to memory during the time that it is reading the he...

Re: ACI Kit Arrived

It assembled with no problems and seems to be working but the error rate is high with the cassette recorder I have. I'll do some more experimenting but I may have to obtain a Panasonic RQ-2102 recorder. This recorder is reported to work reasonably well and was originally recommended by Apple.

Re: Making a case for the Replica I

Use some kind of standoffs to raise it up off the base and provide some openings for ventilation and it should be fine. Are you going to provide clear and reset switches on the outside of the case? Are you going to allow for installing a card in the expansion slot?

Re: Expansion storage board

It looks good. I didn't check all of the wiring. A few comments: - You can expand this to support 2 EEPROM chips if you do some more address decoding. The board I built does this. I gave a link to the design files earlier. - The circuit will also work with 6264 type RAM chips. I sometimes use my boa...
