Terminal firmware V4 fixes CTRL F1 downloading

Postby vbriel » Nov Sat 20, 2010 12:31 pm

Thanks to Garry Jordan for doing the fix on the CTRL-F1 feature to download a text file into the Altair. This update fixes the problem where programs don't load correctly due to delays in BASIC.

http://www.brielcomputers.com/files/ATERMV4.BIN

Put this file onto your SD card. Follow the steps from the manual on performing a Terminal Firmware update:

Terminal section firmware update:

1. Download onto your SD card the terminal firmware update file and power up your Altair 8800 micro like normal.

2. When the system is at a point where you can stop it, lift the STOP switch so nothing is going on with the CPU while the update is running.

3. Press control and F3 at the same time. You will now be prompted with a file name.

4. Enter the name of the firmware update file and press enter.
NOTE: There is no backspace for this function. You will have to start over if you type it in wrong

5. After you type in the name, it will attempt to load that file and begin writing the new terminal software into the EEPROM on the mainboard.
Do not turn off the Altair until after the update is complete. If this firmware update fails, you will have to send in the EEPROM for a replacement.

After a long 4 minutes, the EEPROM will be finished and you will get a message that the update is complete.
However, you will not know if it worked correctly unless you turn off the Altair 8800 micro and turn it back on.
If you can cycle power and the terminal screen comes up, your update worked.

Seems to do the trick on my 16MHz part. Still trying to figure out the deposit issue with that one. Loaded trek8800.bas which is large with no problems. Thanks!

I discovered a bug in the Trek8800.bas source that can cause the program to occasionally hang on startup. Line 4220 had a bad GOTO:

Was:
4220 GOTO 440

Should be:
4220 GOTO 4240

I've updated the .zip file that I originally uploaded.

Hi,

I can't seem to get the firmware to flash. It just keeps saying "Flashing firmware failed."

I start the Altair and load 8kbas.bin then lift RUN/STOP, press CTRL+F3 and at the prompt type ATERMV4.BIN

The file is on the memory card and I load all my other programs etc.....

What am I doing wrong ??

Please help as I have the CTRL+F1 loading problem and want to play SST

Thanks

Mick

When you get that message it is because it is having a problem finding the filename given on the SD card. Try renaming it to a.bin or something like that.

To make things easier, just put the RUN/STOP switch to STOP and AUX down and power it up. Wait until everything settlesdown and then try the F3 function. You don't have to load BASIC to do this function.
