Final prototype of the 88-DSK RAM board testing

Postby vbriel » Aug Mon 01, 2011 10:28 am

OK, the final prototype of the 88DSK RAM board is built and testing. I have 2 prototypes to get out to Al and Garry who have done so much to make the Altair micro 10X what it initially was. Garry has just done all the programming on the disk controller and he has more hours logged than anybody on this.

Here's the features of the 88 DSK RAM board:

32K additional RAM giving the system a total of 64K of RAM
2 512K RAM drives backed by 3 AA rechargeable batteries. (Due to shipping issues, will leave for user to supply)
serial to usb connector allowing user to use a PC as the terminal in place of the onboard terminal.
Utility software to transfer images from SD to the RAM drives.
Additional utilities to import/export individual files to/from the RAM drives to SD.
Modified version of CP/M 2.2 to use 119 track images (512K) or smaller standard emulator images (requires a slight mod to work).

After a little beta testing this month, I can start getting these ready to go out. Just so you know, Word Star and SuperCal or really great on the Altair micro. I even created an image that has Adventure, Zork1, 2 and 3 on it! Fun times having CP/M running.

Far out!

Congratulations on getting all this working Vince (and Al and Garry!) - really looking forward to it.

I assume the serial to usb will need a cable supplied by the user? Firmware/software supplied with the upgrade will enable the port in this early release? Just thinking "out loud". ;)
