Overclocking

Postby GhstWlf » Dec Sun 08, 2013 6:41 am

Hello,
I have yet to get my µKIM yet but I am already looking into overclocking it to 2MHz, would it be possible to do?

I would say it's probably possible but not trivial.

You may have to replace the 6502 by a 6502A; the "A" means it's rated for 2MHz instead of 1MHz.

The RAM is probably fast enough to run at 2MHz and probably so is the EPROM at least if it's rated 120ns or faster.

The RIOT (6532) has to run at 1MHz because programs depend on this for timing. It may also not be fast enough to serve the databus at twice its normal speed, so you'll have to add some circuitry to divide the 2MHz system clock by two, and activate the RDY input of the 6502 for a short time whenever it accesses the 6532.

You may want to get help from the good folks on the 6502.org forums (I'm there too). Also check out http://wilsonminesco.com/ for lots of information (I'm not sure if there's any specific info there but I'm sure there's plenty of useful stuff).
